Exception Handling Configuration Steps in SAP EWM
In this blog, we are going to discuss about configuration for Exception Handling in SAP Extended Warehouse Management
Overview
In SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), exceptional handling is crucial for addressing non-standard situations that may arise during warehouse operations. Here’s a high-level guide to configuring exceptional handling in SAP EWM:
1. Define Exception Codes
Go to EWM > Cross-Process Settings > Exception Codes > Define Exception Codes.
Create new exception codes for the types of issues you want to address (e.g., damaged goods, missing items, location discrepancies).
Assign descriptions to each code to indicate the nature of each exception.
2. Define Exception Code Assignments
Navigate to Cross-Process Settings > Exception Codes > Assign Exception Codes.
Assign each exception code to the appropriate processes, such as goods receipt, picking, packing, etc.
Specify the response that should be taken for each exception code (e.g., cancel the task, change the warehouse task, or continue with a warning).
3. Configure Exception Handling in Process Steps
Go to EWM > Master Data > Process Step.
Define the process steps where exception handling should be active (e.g., during put-away, picking, or inventory counting).
Assign exception codes to specific process steps, ensuring that the warehouse workers have options when encountering issues during these steps.
4. Set Up Warehouse Monitor for Exception Handling
Access the Warehouse Management Monitor via EWM > Monitoring > Warehouse Management Monitor.
In the warehouse monitor, configure views to include tasks with exception codes so that you can monitor any exception-related issues.
Enable notifications to flag or alert supervisors of repeated exceptions or unresolved issues.
5. Configure Warehouse Order and Task Management
Under EWM > Cross-Process Settings > Warehouse Order Creation > Define Priorities and Define Sorting Rules.
Set priorities and sorting rules for tasks that may need to be reprioritized due to exception handling (e.g., high-priority items if damaged goods need replacement).
Use task management to reroute or reassign tasks based on specific exception scenarios.
6. Enable Exception Handling in RF Framework
Go to EWM > RF Framework > Define RF Queue and Define RF Menu.
Ensure that exception codes are available for RF (Radio Frequency) devices, allowing warehouse workers to capture exception data on handheld devices.
Configure exception-specific menus or buttons to simplify reporting during operations.
7. Define Notifications and Alerts for Exceptions
Configure alerts for exception handling using EWM > Monitoring > Alert Configuration.
Set up custom alerts to notify specific users or managers when certain exception codes are triggered, enabling quick responses.
8. Test and Validate Exceptional Handling Configuration
Run end-to-end tests for all relevant processes (goods receipt, picking, packing, shipping, etc.) to validate that exceptions are handled as expected.
Verify that the exception codes, processes, and notifications are functioning correctly.
Adjust configurations based on test outcomes to ensure efficient and effective handling of exceptions.
9. Training and Documentation
Provide training to warehouse staff on using exception codes and the processes involved in handling exceptions.
Create documentation or quick-reference guides to help staff navigate through exception-handling steps.
Conclusion
By following these steps, you can set up effective exception handling in SAP EWM, which helps maintain smooth operations and address unexpected issues efficiently.
